ARESTIN® Antibiotic Therapy to Treat Gum Disease

Confront your periodontal (gum) disease with an antibiotic

If you have gum disease, a deep cleaning is needed to help improve the health of your teeth and gums. After a deep cleaning, it is inevitable that some bacteria are left behind. That’s why at our office we recommend ARESTIN®. It is a low-dose antibiotic placed directly into the infected gum tissue that helps kill bacteria which are the root of the problem. Our team will help assess and customize the best treatment option for you.

FDA approved

ARESTIN® contains tiny microspheres of minocycline hydrochloride (1 mg); this prescription antibiotic is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These microspheres release the antibiotic over time, killing bacteria so your gums can heal optimally.

ARESTIN® treatment is painless and easy

Your dental hygienist recommends ARESTIN in the infected pockets below your gum line. This may happen at the time of the deep cleaning or during routine cleaning visits. Your dental hygienist will gently place these microspheres into infected areas. ARESTIN will dissolve on its own, so no removal is required.

ARESTIN® is different from antibiotic pills

ARESTIN is different from a systemic antibiotic that you take as a pill where the antibiotic travels throughout your entire body. ARESTIN is placed right where you need it, delivering the localized antibiotic directly to your gums with no systemic effect.

What to expect as your gums heal

After treatment with ARESTIN®, there are a few things you need to know. Avoid chewing hard, crunchy, or sticky foods such as carrots, taffy, and gum for 7 days. You should also avoid using floss or a dental pick in the treated areas for 10 days. With proper dental hygiene, it’s possible to fight bacteria and avoid future problems with your gums.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the antibiotic remain active in the periodontal pockets?

The gelatinous antibiotic powder is designed to release medication gradually over several days, providing a sustained and localized effect on the infected areas.

Will I need to take oral antibiotics in addition to the local therapy?

In most cases, local antibiotic therapy is sufficient to address the bacterial infection in the gums. However, in some instances of severe gum disease, we may recommend oral antibiotics to provide a more comprehensive treatment approach.

Are there any side effects associated with local antibiotic therapy?

Side effects from local antibiotic therapy are rare, as the medication is applied directly to the affected areas and does not enter the bloodstream in significant amounts. Some patients may experience slight discomfort or sensitivity in the treated areas, which typically resolves within a few days.
